Two-year Treasury yield is 4.5% and ten-year yield is 4.0%, producing an inverted segment in which the longer maturity yields less. This inversion may reflect expected future easing, term premium, or demand, not a guaranteed recession date.
How to interpret it
Curve shape reflects expected policy rates, inflation, term premium, supply, demand, liquidity, and risk appetite. Inversion is a signal, not a deterministic recession forecast. An upward curve normally offers higher yields at longer maturities, while a flat or inverted curve signals unusual pricing of future short rates and risk. Curve steepening or flattening can occur through either end, so labels should identify which yields moved.
Limitations and common misconceptions
Bills, notes, bonds, on-the-run securities, par curves, spot curves, and fitted series use different conventions. Taxes, technical flows, and central-bank policy can distort interpretation. Treasury securities differ in liquidity, coupons, issuance, and special financing value. Constant-maturity series are modeled rather than directly investable. Yield-curve signals have false positives and variable lags. Nominal yields combine expected inflation, real rates, and term premium. A research page should timestamp the curve and name the source. Charts should allow users to distinguish a bull steepener from a bear steepener and compare history. Do not convert one spread into a deterministic market forecast; pair it with growth, inflation, policy, and credit evidence. Curve analysis should distinguish on-the-run issues, which can carry liquidity premiums, from older securities. Key-rate duration shows how a portfolio responds at specific maturities, while one aggregate duration assumes a parallel move. Historical charts should use consistent constant-maturity methodology and clearly mark periods when instruments or Federal Reserve operating frameworks differed.
