Gross Exposure

Gross exposure is the sum of a portfolio’s long and short market exposures, usually expressed as a percentage of net asset value or capital.

Why gross exposure matters

It indicates total market engagement and can reveal leverage, liquidity demand, financing needs, and sensitivity that net exposure alone can conceal.

How it is applied

Managers add the absolute value of long and short exposures under a stated methodology, with careful treatment of derivatives, options, cash, look-through holdings, and offsetting instruments. Add the absolute economic values of long and short positions and divide by the stated capital base. Include derivatives using an appropriate exposure measure and apply look-through to baskets where practical. Report gross alongside net exposure, beta, stress loss, liquidity, and financing.

Portfolio example

A fund is 130% long and 70% short. Gross exposure is 200% of NAV, while net exposure is 60% long. A fund has 140% long exposure and 60% short exposure relative to NAV. Gross exposure is 200% and net exposure is 80%. A 10% adverse move across both books in different directions could create a large loss even though net is below 100%.

How to interpret it

Higher gross exposure generally magnifies security-specific, factor, financing, and liquidity risks, but it does not by itself measure expected loss or diversification. Higher gross exposure indicates more capital deployed and often more leverage, trading, financing, and idiosyncratic opportunity. It does not directly measure risk because offset quality, volatility, concentration, and derivatives matter. Market-neutral funds can have high gross with low net.

Limitations and common misconceptions

Notional amounts can misstate derivatives risk, and different managers use delta, duration, or other adjusted exposure. Offset assumptions, crowded positions, and nonlinear payoffs limit comparisons. Notional can misstate option and rate exposure, while legally enforceable netting may matter for counterparty risk but not market risk. Short positions expand when prices rise. Gross figures across managers are incomparable without the same methodology, denominator, and treatment of derivatives and cash. Time series of gross exposure can reveal whether leverage rises after gains or during deteriorating liquidity. Stress testing should shock long and short books asymmetrically because both can lose together when relative relationships break. Regulatory gross measures and manager risk measures may differ, so every published figure needs its exact calculation basis.
