Upside Capture

Also known as Up-market capture ratio

Upside capture measures how a portfolio performed relative to a benchmark during periods when the benchmark had positive returns, usually expressed as a percentage.

Why upside capture matters

It helps investors assess participation in rising markets and complements downside capture, drawdown, beta, and total-return analysis.

How it is applied

Analysts select period and frequency, isolate positive benchmark intervals, annualize or compound portfolio and benchmark returns consistently, then divide the portfolio result by the benchmark result. Identify benchmark-positive periods, compound the portfolio return across those periods, annualize consistently when required, and divide by the benchmark’s corresponding return under the selected convention. Use the same frequency, currency, and fee basis. Pair the result with downside capture and full-cycle return.

Portfolio example

An upside capture of 85% suggests the portfolio gained about 85% as much as the benchmark across the selected positive periods under the calculation method. During selected up months, a benchmark compounds to 20% and a fund to 16%. Simplified upside capture is 80%. This does not mean the fund gains 80% in every positive month; it summarizes compounded performance over the chosen sample and method.

How to interpret it

Above 100% indicates greater upside participation, not necessarily superior risk-adjusted performance. A defensive strategy may intentionally have lower upside capture and much lower downside capture. Above 100% indicates the fund gained more than the benchmark across positive periods; below 100% indicates less participation. A defensive strategy may intentionally have lower upside capture if it also limits downside enough to improve long-run compounding.

Limitations and common misconceptions

Results depend on benchmark, period, frequency, compounding, fees, and few observations. Negative portfolio returns during positive benchmark periods and small benchmark gains can create unintuitive ratios. Results depend on benchmark, observation frequency, start date, and annualization formula. A few extreme months can dominate. Capture ratios ignore performance when the benchmark is flat or moves in the opposite direction and do not reveal leverage, volatility, or path. The measure should be presented with the number of qualifying observations and confidence around the estimate. A fund can produce attractive capture through leverage in a few strong months while suffering poor results elsewhere. Scatter plots of fund versus benchmark returns and capture across rolling windows reveal whether the relationship is stable or sample dependent.
